After giving this a few minutes thought, I must concede I'm not sure what Turtle McConnell's (and the rest of the GOP) motivation is.

Evidence suggests hard-core Trump supporters don't care. They will support the President no matter what is revealed in the impeachment trial.

Polling suggests a majority of Americans favor a more open and thorough trial than Turtle McConnell has been willing to hold. So McConnell's stonewalling likely will have a political cost with the electorate down the road.

I have not seen any reporting which would suggest the evidence and testimony of the impeachment trial would lead to impeachment or prosecution of other major political figures.

Given the above, it seems McConnell's desire to hold a "shove it down our throats" kangaroo court at 2 a.m. serves no rational purpose.

The two reasonable explanations I can think of are:

    1) It's simply habit. McConnell's main successes as Senate Majority Leader have been via rat-f***ing Democrats by any means possible, regardless of the cost to the country or democratic norms. Since there is no strategy which will clearly benefit him or the GOP he is just doing what he always does.

    2) McConnell and the GOP are hoping that if they get through the impeachment trial quickly, the typical American's  5-minute attention span and one-sentence deep processing of history will kick in, and by election time we'll be back to discussing hamberders and covfefe (or whatever nonsense Trump gets into) instead of the fact the President tried to extort bribes from a foreign government and then tried (very incompetently) to cover up  he did so.

Thank you bigly for your helpful and thoughtful reply SP. What you said makes a heckuva lot more sense than what moscow mitch that son of an itch is doing. From promising to make Obama a one-term president years ago to denying him THE RIGHT to select a SCOTUS replacement for Scalia to tabling all bills (hundreds of them) he has received from the House since the dumb don takeover he is a no good son of a b from top to bottom just because that is what he does best and can get away with it! Happy Wednesday to thee! :)
