In order for a verdict to be reached all 12 jurors must agree, right? Why? Why not just go with the majority?

Getting 12 people to agree on anything isn't easy. When we have elections we go with the majority don't we? Well except for the dumba** electoral college thingy which can be "majority" when popular vote is sidewise otherwise sidewise. An American fault that prolly no other country is guilty of mebbe.
