The members met daily for lunch at the Algonquin Club/Restaurant/Hotel and they were known for their lively witty conversation and urbane sophistitcation. There were original members and also others who floated in and out from time to time throughout the years. First met in 1919. Last meeting was in 1943 though it's greatest heyday was in the '20 and 30's.
Think internet social sites are less pretentious versions of it? Many of us meet daily. There are regulars and then there are floaters who come and go. Conversation is the carrot. I dunno. Seems Algonquish to me.
