One bad decision can ruin lives. I think of JFK Jr flying at night. That decision killed him his wife and her sister. Why did he gamble?

He didn't have an instrument rating which I guess means he wasn't licensed to fly at night.  So he broke the law then right? There was no wiggle room in that decision. He made a decision the consequences of which were irreversible. Why take a chance? I don't get it.
