Tell me how this gibberish makes any sense at all. Can you?

Because we don't know about all the evils that befall those who are unknown we should ignore the evils that befall those we do know about because after all they are not that special.

How can we possibly react to what we don't know about and because of that we are supposed to ignore what we do know about?

I don't know about you but that makes NO SENSE TO ME. Sheesh.

Oh dear,  my ears are burning again. I wonder why that is?....

This question (for those who haven't been following events) is based upon RosieG and I disagreeing about the nature of the grieving for Kobe Bryant and the other victims of the recent helicopter crash near Los Angeles, CA.

I am concerned that peoples' reactions to the tragedy have been manipulated by Mass Media Culture constructing a myth around Kobe Bryant which is not an accurate reflection of who he is or his importance in the world.

At no point did I say people should NOT grieve for the victims of the tragedy. But I think when people (besides those who personally knew those who passed on) grieve for the victims, it would be better if non-intimates were consciously aware that at least part of their grief is a product of Mass Media Culture influence.

In another thread, I used the hypothetical example of a death of a 13-year-old girl who is NOT Kobe Bryant's daughter to note that tragedy occurs even in instances where Mass Media Culture does not direct our attention to it.  My point in bringing this up was NOT to discourage people from grieving for Gigi Bryant. My point was I would hope people would grieve for Gigi Bryant and my hypothetical 13-year-old victim of a drunk driver EQUALLY.  The fact that Mass Media Culture has brought Gigi's death to our attention does NOT make it more tragic than the death of the hypothetical not-famous 13-year-old.

The more I think about it, the more I believe I am likely asking too much of people (for reasons which would likely require a graduate thesis paper to fully elucidate).  But I stand by my answer to the original question which started all of this. We cannot generalize about how people react to the tragic deaths of non-intimates from the Kobe Bryant et al. tragedy. The influence of Mass Media Culture is just too great in this instance.

Why would you OUT yourself SP? I did not do it. You did. I wonder why that is? Perplexing puzzling. Thank you for your reply. I expect if I get punished for this you will come to my defense and say it was you who mamed names not I? Right? And that you felt a need to defend yourself when NO ONE KNEW TO WHOM I WAS REFERRING TO? I dunno. Do you?

Well, if you and I having legitimate disagreements about a subject are cause for "punishment" (I'm not even sure what that would entail), then things are very different than I imagined.

If the site moderators are going to give us grief over this, please ask them to direct their ire towards me. I don't see how anything you did is a TOS violation. I don't think anything I did violates policies, either. But I may not be the most objective judge of my behavior...

You're quite right.  Just because a person is famous doesn't make them more important than anyone else.   ALL deaths are tragedies.  Why ios so much being focused on one person when 8 others died?  Were their lives of less value?  Forgive my ignorance, but I honestly don't know who this bryant person was.

Yes, all deaths are tragedies and no, their lives are not of less value.  However, the general public has more exposure to the "celebrity" than to the other persons who pass on, and so the celebrity has in effect touched more lives.  When we follow the lives of sports figures or other celebrities over the course of several years, we come to identify with them.  We feel we have come to know them, which is not the case with someone who has no public exposure.
