Rebel Rebel (1974)

The first single from the "Diamond Dogs" album was an instant hit, entering the Top 10 in its first week of chart action.

  • I didn't really become a Bowie until Live Aid.

  • I  love David Bowie. Those days of all of his Ziggy Stardust/Diamond Dog getup I was a child and didn't notice him until later. His death was just stunning to me-he was really that old?! Thank you for the video.

Yes, he had just had his 69th birthday when he died. He was born on January 8th 1947. He began recording at the age of 17 and he had been struggling for five years before he had his first hit record with "Space Oddity" in 1969. That was followed by another series of flops before he really became a superstar with the "Ziggy Stardust" album and its single "Starman". After that, his back catalogue began selling well and "Space Oddity" became a hit again in 1975, by which time he was entering his "Thin White Duke" phase with the "Station To Station" album. Since then he remained one of the most regular visitors to the charts and he has retained a fervent following among generations.

The first Bowie single I bought was "Jean Genie" at the age of 11. By the time I was 16 I had the albums "Ziggy Stardust", "Aladdin Sane", "Hunky Dory" and "Diamond Dogs". Meanwhile, "Sound And Vision" (which I first bought on a single at 15) was the first song I put onto my computer. I'm 54 now and I now have many of his albums on CD.
