The Carpenters had their final US number one with this cover of a song first recorded in 1961 by the Marvelettes. The original version, which also got to number one in the US, was not a hit at all in the UK and the Carpenters were the first act to bring the song into the British charts (where it equalled "Yesterday Once More" by peaking in second place).
This was my third most favorite version of this song.
Which were your top two favourite versions?
Te Marvelettes and the Beatles.
I prefer the Carpenters' version to the Beatles version. The Beatles are tops when it comes to their own material, but most of their cover versions were pretty average IMO. The Carpenters, on the other hand, did a great version of "Postman" and they were rewarded with a transatlantic hit.
