Ken Boothe - Everything I Own (1974)

This song was originally recorded by Bread in 1972, and their version was a minor hit. In 1974, Ken Boothe released a reggae version of the song and took it to number one in the UK.

  • I never heard this version before. Bread hit #5 with the original in the US.

Bread's version hovered in the 30s in the UK. They only had one Top 10 single here, that was "Make It With You" which got to number 5. They did better here with albums than singles.

Ken Boothe's version came out just at a time when there was a trend for Jamaican singers doing reggaefied covers of other people's songs (check out also John Holt's version of "Help Me Make It Through The Night" and Paul Davidson's version of "Midnight Rider", both reggae covers of American songs which hit the Top 10 here while the original versions got nowhere near it).
