Five years after Simon and Garfunkel went their separate ways, Garfunkel had a smash hit with his revival of this song written before he was born. In a year when there were several revivals of very old songs doing well in the charts, this was one of the oldest of the lot. The song itself was already 41 years old when Garfunkel had a hit with it, and now this version is 41 years old. Lol:)
My favorite version was from the Flamingos in 1959, which peaked at #11. Garfunkel got to #18 with his cover.
Garfunkel's version got to number one in the UK. The Flamingos' version failed to chart in the UK, where they had only one Top 40 entry ("Boogaloo Party" at #26), and even that was 10 years after their US success with "I Only Have Eyes For You".
