What, given your preference, world or societal issue would you place the most priority on? What suggestions could you offer to remedy it?

  • Zee, I remember studying infant mortality (death < one year age) around 1990, when I was involved in a project to mitigate homelessness.

    At that time, there were studies showing that empowerment of women, one of the first outcomes was lower infant mortality.

  • Also, allowing women to have more say over the choice to reproduce AND work in an earning capacity benefits the whole family unit, and by connection, her society.

  • I think studies are still showing that.. and better outcomes for women re not marrying too young etc.

  • There's poverty everywhere, even here in the U.S...
    I do wholeheartedly agree with your appreciation of the.oppression of women. Women here judge the condition of women worldwide by their own condition and wonder what's.the.big deal!!
    I am convinced that regardless of what oppressed group of people you choose. From among the most oppressed groups in the.world, they turn around and oppress their women.
    So go figure.

  • I think some sort of socialist  capitalism, or socially conscious capitalist system may be in order. Telling people to drive less or preaching to them about how they are.wrong for wanting stuff obviously has not worked.

  • It's a tough call..environment matters to me, child abuse does, and treating animals humanely... 

    But I think I would go for empowering and giving more rights to women in parts of the world where they are still very much subjugated and treated more like property than human beings.. where if a woman is raped she can be stoned to death for her *crime* - where domestic abuse and domestic rape is considered acceptable and a *private* matter...

  • One of the most pressing problems at the moment would be terrorism. What to do? I doubt that anybody, no matter ow well qualified, could answer that one. 

    I said it was only one of the big problems: world health and famine are probably bigger but, insulated as we are in the west, they do't seem as immediate as terrorism.
