Do first impressions generally reveal who someone is? Do you present yourself to others with a "best foot forward" or a wart?

I know. Different strokes for different folks. I guess shock value is memorable. Does it last or does shock become dull boring? Two restaurants side by side. One is called "The Tortured Gut". The other is called "The Cozy Cafe". I wonder how many folks will prefer the tortured gut?

Bianca Jagger once said "If you meet someone at your worst, they will never be disappointed and you cannot fail worse than that.  What comes next is bound to be an improvement".  She said something like that.  I am paraphrasing.

No they don't.  However, the more outlandish something is the longer we'll remember it.  That's how our brains work.  The name 'Cozy Cafe' is dull, and boring.  Sure, they may have the best food in the entire world, but unless they can get customers in, how will they know?  The name "The Tortured Gut" may sound sickening, yet the name is so striking that it will be remembered (whether or not one ate there).
Hi, I'm Tom.  Hi, I'm ZZ-top.  Which name will be remembered longer?

Depends on the Tom Shuhak. Wasn't ZZ top two guys with huge beards who looked weird? Or am I confusing them with another twosome? Except for the internet I cannot recall ever meeting another Tom or Tommy. Tom Cruise Tom Jones Tom Selleck come to mind. Tom Paine Tom Wolfe Tom Tom. Being remembered because you are weird bizarre odd is one thing. Remember TINY TIM and miss vickie? Who could forget that persona and the falsetto? Allegedly he did it to attract attention. Stand out. Be noticed. But for me calling oneself something repulsive just to be noticed would work contrary. A pothole. A landmine. Something/someone to avoid. I'm not THAT curious that I'd want to test out The Tortured Gut. Too cutesy piesy which also leaves me cold! Different strokes. Thank you for your reply and Happy Friday! :) This post was edited by RosieG at February 21, 2020 9:35 AM MST

Even though Tiny Tim's singing was atrocious, you still remember him.  Why?  Because he sang good or because he didn't (and yes, he did it on purpose)?
Yes, ZZ-Top was a trio of guys with long beards.  Again, why do you know that?  Did you like or even listen to them or was it the beards?

If "Tom" did something outlandish, you'd remember him.  But if he were just an average joe; a face in the crowd ... odds are you wouldnt.  That was my point.  No, even I wouldn't want to eat at a place called "The Tortured Gut", but odds are high I'd remember the name.  Maybe enough to be curious about what they served (look online, ask some who was brave enough to eat there).

First impressions are essential to being remembered.  I had a job interview back in the mid 80's (the only one I've ever had).  I was just an average joe - dressed averagely, average looks, and such.  But everytime that interviewer saw me she remembered me.  No, not by name, but by frogs.  Yep, frogs.  I was 'frog man'.  Why?  Because In the interview she asked me about hobbies.  I told her my hobby was meteorology.  Now it so happened that we were having a storm at the very moment.  She jokingly asked me if it'd bring snow (as many storms here often bring surprise snows that forecasters miss).  I told her the frogs said no.  After her initial surprise and further inquiry, I told her how I was experimenting with forecasting weather by the way frogs croaked.  While I was off on the duration of the storm, it didn't bring snow... even though it was cold enough to.  My first impression with her was a lasting one.  Not because of my name, my clothes, my speech, or even my looks; but because of frogs.

Remembering vulgar shocking disgusting atrocious vile is not the same thing as remembering fondly a pleasant experience. Manson is memorable. Ted Bundy. Hitler. What group is your most veriest FAVORITE ever? Hacksaw Sam and the Turds or the Fifth Dimension? I put little value on remembering evil awful horrible disgusting. Better to forget don't you think? So well heck different strokes for different folks. Steely Dan...a favorite. Genesis. Chicago. Fleetwood Mac. Larry Carlton. Not a crackpot wackadoodle name among them. Miles Davis. Huey Lewis and the news. Thank you for your reply Shuhak. :) Cristopher Cross...Sailing.

I put zero value on remembering horrible people.  I could care less about their vulgar deeds let alone their names.  Not worth the space in my memory.   Yet, for some reason I do remember a lot of them.  Except for the three I didn't recognize), each name you listed evoked a memory in my head.  The evil ones evoked a memory of disgusting, the musicians evoked a memory of one of their songs or something about them......
Steely Dan - "Do it again"; Chicago - "25 or 6 to 4"; Fleetwood Mac - "Little lies"; Genesis - Phil Collins."; Huey Lewis and the News - Back to the Future movies; The Fifth Dimension - "Up Up and Away".  Now, Christopher Cross did not make a good first impression with me.  His voiced made me want to cringe (fingernails on a chalkboard).  He may very well be a good singer, but yuck!  I don't recall the names, Miles Davis or Larry Carlton.  Either they left no impression on me, or I never heard them.

You may find this weird, but my favoritest group is ABBA.  I liked them since I first heard their music back in the 70's (their first impression on me was a good one).

I also like Neil Diamond and Enya.  Neil Diamond not only had a good voice, but he was nice to his fans when in concert (I was very impressed by that.  no, I never saw him, I only heard about it from others who had).
I first heard Enya sing, "Orinoco Flow".  It was her voice that I liked most (first impression).  I've enjoyed many of her subsequent songs as well (at least the ones in english), although many have a sad connotation.

Well, both actually---and I'm more likely to remember Tom longer than ZZ-top---but I'll admit I have a unique situation relative to those two names.

It's that "unique situation" that makes you remember one over the other.

On the other hand, I have many talents and abilities that cause me to be remembered---while I am only aware of one talent that ZZ-top has.

And that was the nature of the "unique situation" to which I was referring---lol

All but one of the close friends in my life are only there because they passed my first impression test. I read body language very well so within 20 minuets I can read a person from cover to cover. My best close friend was giving me some very confusing readings when I first met him so I was starting to think that maybe I shouldn't get too friendly with him. But one day well I had my dog with me I ran into the guy and my dog took an instant shining to him so I figured if he is good enough for my dog he is good enough for me and I'm glad I did because I couldn't ask for a better friend. Cheers and happy weekend! This post was edited by Nanoose at February 21, 2020 6:42 PM MST
