Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» Did y'all SPRING FORWARD today? Is the USofA the only spring forward fall back nation or is it a worldwide global event?
Hi Rev! Howya doin'? In the US it used to be forward in April and back in October as I recall. But now every year it's different. Thank you for your reply and Happy Monday. I'd like to stop doing it. What's the point of it? :)
I believe 70 countries currently observe daylight saving time. While there are a few countries/provinces in the southern hemisphere that observe it (parts of Australia as well as South America), the majority of counties/provinces are in the northern hemisphere.
What is the point of doing it Shuhak? Wasn't it originally something to do with farming and capturing more daylight to do the chores? How many farms are there now? It just seems silly to me to flip flop each year carrying forward something that used to have relevance but no longer does. Thank you for your reply and Happy Monday! :)
I don't know, although I believe Benjamin Franklin first proposed it (in the US). True. In fact, keeping the time permanently on DST might even save money (energy usage). What's stopping us from going to a permanent time is fear. Yes, it will initially cost money (what doesn't?) - updating computer code, making sure all states are in compliance,etc.). Yes, some people will be angry (can't please everyone). If we stayed on DST, on the shortest days of the year (mid-december), the sun would rise a little after 8:00 instead of the current 7:00, and it would set around 5:40 instead of the current 4:40 (at least at my latitude - the exact time varies the further north or south one is located). That means kids would be going to school in the dark (especially in the northern states), which many parents don't like (safety issues). Legislators fear that if they anger the wrong people it could jeopardize their status (so of course they claim its due to economical issues).
