I'd be surprised if there aren't already going to be millions of people losing homes and jobs.

All those school closures - sure, teachers get paid regardless.  But the hourly workers don't.  How are they going to make their mortgage payments, or buy groceries?

Same with forcing restaurants and bars to provide "carry out" only.  They will lay off all wait staff and those people won't have any income for loans or groceries or utilities.

Same with convention and vacation workers.

At least we weren't in the "vacation season", yet.

Oh, yeah.  There's gonna be a hit to the global economy.  No way to avoid it.

btw - all this "shelter in place", yet the government continues to run mass transit.  How does that make sense?

Instead of another 1987 Recession talk is now veering toward a 1929 Depression. Did you know that 45,000 out-of-work folks in Ohio filed for unemployment insurance in one week? Thousands more in cities all over the country are doing likewise. The unemployment system is overwhelmed as are hospitals and health care workers. Very soon it will be a war-like situation which is when they can't save everyone so they focus on the most likely to survive and the other ones just die. At 82(me) and 84 (Jim) we know we are expendable. In my whole life it never occurred to me that if I needed hospitalization it wouldn't be available to me. That is very scary Walt. Last year Jim had a stroke and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance and cared for. In 2008 I had cancer surgery followed by months of chemotherapy and radiation ending October 8, 2008 but who remembers the date? There was always a bed for me or a chair or infusion or whatever I needed. For whose undergoing cancer treatment today I feel very bad for them. When the wave of COVID 19 patients hits needing attention what happens to them? What about folks with other life-threatening conditions like dialysis or heart surgery? So I worry and we are being very good about sheltering in place. What changes have you made and do you fear some kind of cataclysmic shift in our lives? We don't know yet how bad it will get so we can't know if we will ever come back from it..that is to say...how far we will be ABLE to come back. Thank you for your thoughtful and informative reply Walt. Often you make me feel a whole better after we chat. But you never lie to me so I can't say I feel a whole better with this response. It's OK. Not your fault. STAY SAFE. Happy Wednesday! :)

It hasn't really affected me, yet.
I don't really go to restaurants, other than take-out.
And working at a hospital, they aren't going to close ... and not doing "elective" surgeries during this time doesn't effect my job (payroll).
In fact, if it comes to it, I can do much of my job from home.  But Accounting doesn't really have much contact with the public, anyway.

The only thing that's changed, so far, is I don't go to my friend's house every day - since her parents have health issues, and they don't want any outside visitors.  Though I do still run shopping errands for them, I leave the goods at the door.

At least we have come a long way since the influenza pandemic of 1918.
Did you know the "influenza" term came about because they thought it had to do with the influence of planets?!?  Wow.
Even though we know better, we still use the term.  lol

I did not know that nugget of info Walt. Thank you for sharing it with me. The Spanish Flu killed almost 700,000 Americans I read in 1918. What was the population then and how does that translate to what the deaths would have been had the population 330,000,000? Every day is a new thing. Wonder when the HOAX gubment will get their act together and actually START DOING WHAT THEY KEEP SAYING IS BEING DONE?  Thank you for your reply and Happy Thursday! :)
