Have you read the entire Declaration of Independence?

For Americans it almost July 4--Independence Day. Have you ever read the entire Declaration of Independence?

  • Did so just now, thanks to the prompting of your question.

It reminded me of what my teachers taught of American History in school.

It's a useful reminder that the current democracy is not absolute, and if the people perceive that the government is causing unbearable suffering, unfairness, tyranny, and corruption, they have a right and duty to rebel and replace it with one that does the job properly.

Tyranny is normally considered to be the behaviour of one despot, but it can as easily be the result of an oligarchy or a sub-group within a society. It is certainly worthwhile to keep a critical eye on what governments permit themselves to do.

Yeah....I'm surprised that most people haven't read it. We had to read the whole thing in 8th grade and our teacher kinda took us through it line by line. What you say is true, but most people only know "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

I'm glad you read it! :)

Well, yes.  All 1500 words.....not pages.    It's not a novel or anything.

Of course.  I graduated high school.  Back when I had an educational experience such as high school, we actually learned things besides how to text and copy data.

But do you know generally what it says about why we were declaring independence? I think most people don't.
