Discussion»Questions»Death and Dying» It's a cold, rainy morning there's a stillness outside, no movement no noise, even the birds aren't chirping. Is the sky grey, or gray?
Actually, the sky is still blue. It's the color of the clouds you wish to know.
It may surprise you to know that clouds are really transparent (clouds are made of water droplets and water is clear (transparent)). Water droplets, however, scatter light (because of the way they're shaped). Therefore the blue we normally see is broken up and scattered, giving us a white hue. Depending on how many water droplets there are (the thickness of the cloud deck), this white hue is sometimes lighter or darker. Having to have a name for everything, the English call it grey, but the Americans (always having to be different) call it gray.
I have found the upside in this Corona virus debacle. I almost never hear a plane going over my building heading into or out of LGA; the schools are closed, so no boisterous high schoolers are rampaging through the neighborhood; buses are on a less frequent schedule because few people are traveling; there is virtually no traffic on the streets and roads; blaring car horns have all but stopped and I'm willing to bet the air pollution level has dropped considerably. However, the birds have started their chirping at around 1:30-2:00 AM and the cacaphony in the trees outside my bedroom window wakes me up much earlier than I would like. Right now, it's raining and gloomy and the birds are not singing. Just peace and quiet. I could get used to this.
