"Improperly worn masks can raise virus risks" per the surgeon general. How do you wear a mask "improperly"?

The mask covers the mouth and nose and bands on each end go over the ears. How else do you wear a surgical mask?

Surgical masks don't block the micro-particles the virus can travel on.
Only N95 rated masks do so ... and they must be properly fitted, or particles can get between the skin and mask.
Even beard stubble can compromise the proper fit of mask against skin.

Oh. Thank you Walt. So those blue marks we have are worth sh**? We haven't been wearing them anyway. Jim uses one each time he uses the leafblower which kicks up a lot of dust. Happy Wednesday. STAF SAFE! :)

Basically, wearing a mask is more about protecting others than yourself.
If you sneeze or cough, the mask is more effective at blocking the particles than using your elbow.

  • Don't worry. The masks intended for Liberals will have instructions on the package.
. The rest of us know how to wear them.

You are very odd. You never let an opportunity go by to attack the unyou the nonyou the opposite of you. Do you? Your mission apparently. Odd that.

A majority of people don't know how to properly wear a facial (medical) mask.

    - Wash hands THOROUGHLY  BEFORE putting on a mask AND after removing mask.
    - Masks must cover the mouth AND nose completely, leaving NO gaps - not even the slightest gap!   (this means the mask must touch one's face completely).
    - Metal nose bridge must be pinched to conform to nose tightly (again, NO gaps).
    - Properly adjust the 2 straps to secure a tight seal
    - Once mask is in place, NEVER touch it again - NEVER!!! Always remove from behind.

If these procedures aren't followed, the mask is useless.

An N-95 mask is NOT the same as a dust mask (the kind one would wear when sanding wood).  Dust mask cannot form a tight seal, and are meant only to block liquid droplets and aerosols coming OUT of the wearers mouth/nose, not block them from coming IN.
Oh, and in case you were wondering what "N-95" means...

The "N" means not oil resistant, and the "95" means it removes 95% of all particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter.

    (example sizes ...)
    Sawdust ranges from 30-600 microns
Wood smoke ranges from 0.01 to .0.1 microns
    Oxygen is .0005 microns
    COVID-19 virus is .17 microns

So, how big is a micron anyway?   1 inch = 25400 microns

Thank you for your very thoughtful and helpfully informative reply Shuhak. We have those blue masks which Jim wears when he uses the leafblower because it kicks up lots of dust. We already had them. We did not go to buy any. Happy Wednesday. STAY SAFE.
