My country sucks.

No that is not a question. Nor should it be.

John Oliver is entirely right about Brexit Britain.

    I don't think that's necessarily true.

Surely, just like many Trump voters in the USA a racist xenophobic [expletive deleted]s, some the Brexit Leave voters were similarly just immigrant-bashing. But I think there are also legitimate concerns about globalization, the Neoliberal Consensus, and rising wealth/income inequality which influenced the vote.

I think Brexit was a dumb approach, because I see little evidence the Master of the Universe in London are any less "I've upped mine...now UP YOURS!" than the Masters in Brussels, but I understand why some people want to lash out (however futilely) in any way they can.

And, yes, John Oliver is "the bomb." His takedown of Trump's "We'll make Mexico pay for the border wall" nonsense was epic.

All true OS. This article hits the nails on the head:

    http://www.salon.com/2016/06/21/brexit_is_british_for_trump_why_the_u_k_s_anti_europe_surge_should_scare_us/

Its written by an American who knows what he is talking about (like you) and quite unlike TYT who confused the EU with the single currency in a video to 'educate viewers'.

But yes, my country still sucks. ;-)

  • No nation should believe it's own advertising Burnley.  :)

For that matter, no nation should believe other people's advertising about it either.  Both are adverts and therefore untrue, or at least unreliable.

I have no doubt many are having a pop at 'the usual suspects' in their 'out' vote.  I also have no doubt that people's ignorance and foolishness will be brought out into the open whenever a large enough group start suffering.  One of my uncles was a member of Mosley's Blackshirts in the '30s for example and we know that the best way to keep down extreme political viewpoints is to enable and ensure, so far as is possible, prosperity among the majority.

I'm afraid the powers that be have failed miserably in that duty.  Not just here, but worldwide.  Over reliance on neoliberal economics has been shown to be unsustainable without appearing to punish a majority.  That won't be tolerated ad nauseam and so it has proved.

But there is also the issue of direct democratic accountability and far too few are talking about how many people may have voted the way they did because of that.  There is great fear about the upcoming TTIP for example, which is rumoured to go much further than it needs to for an economic agreement for purely ideological motives.
