Are those who live where it rains A LOT more often depressed than those who live where it doesn't? Does sunshine bring happiness?

I believe it's been scientifically proven that those who live in northern climates tend to have higher rates of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) ... which is often treated by brighter lighting.

But that is due to the lack of sunlight, more than an excess of rain.
I mean, areas with monsoons and hurricanes have more rain than those northern climes ... but in a shorter time period.  lol

On the other hand, I don't know that sunshine brings happiness so much as it tends to reduce the chance of depression.
I mean ... Not being depressed is not the same as being happy.

    We're still doing well.
Other than a couple friends getting a little stir crazy with cabin fever.

Apparently depression and thoughts of suicide are what some folks are having to cope with. Rubbing salt in the wound. Hope you stay safe Walt.

Sunshine increases serotonin levels in the brain, while darkness increases melatonin levels.  Serotonin is sometimes called the "happy hormone", as it helps regulate mood.  Melatonin is the hormone that regulates sleep.

Would it surprise you to know that people are not only have more depression if they live where it rains a lot, but also if they live where it's usually hot and humid (no clouds)?

Thank you for your thoughtful and informative reply Shuhak. After five straights of having not seen the sun at all during that time I know I would not want to live in any area where it rained a lot. There is something so confining about it. I may live most of my life indoors but I like to look out at the sun. It cheers me. Now of course if I lived where it rains all the time that would be my "norm". This crazy weather is either an anomaly or our new normal. Weird. :)

  • Probably. But I've been so traumatized by drought and wildfires here in California that a lack of rain is depressing to me. But it tends to only rain during the winter here, so I expect gloomier weather around that time.

We've had five solid days of relentless rain NB. Per today's forecast it won't rain today. If I can see the sun come out it will cheer me up. Thank you for your reply and Happy Saturday to thee! :)
