    He was the underdog against Stephen A. Douglas? Is that what you are referring to bh? Lincoln's eloquence outshone that of Douglas. Lincoln wasn't an underdog once he opened his mouth and  people heard him speak. Was he? Thank you for your reply and Happy Wednesday! :)

    Pity - yes, for some. Sympathy, perhaps.

    Empathy? For others of low attainment, it may be a sense of not being alone, or worse, a sense of superiority if the subject is less successful still.

    Thank you for your reply Durdle and Happy Wednesday. Or maybe simple kindness? Or being extremely tired of the same people always capturing the prize due to "popularity" rather than talent/substantive content? I have wondered about it and there are probably as many reasons as there are people who react that way! :)
