It's a song Lago. Remember the Statue of Liberty? Remember the words engraved thereon? America WAS a land where all were welcome. No longer. It is the antithesis of that today and Trump will make it even more selfish/nationalistic/isolationist/unaccepting/closed off.  "Oh beautiful for spacious skies for amber waves of grain. For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain. America America God shed his grace on thee. And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea". I used to sing that song when it was true. Where is the brotherhood today? Gone away. Did I answer your question Lago? That was when I was a little girl. Many decades ago. I always got goosebumps when I sung it. :( This post was edited by RosieG at October 5, 2016 5:45 AM MDT

  • The Statue of Liberty really doesn't have anything to do with America.  It was just the brainchild of a few eccentric French guys.   We didn't even want it originally and getting us to pitch in for it was next to impossible.  Just sayin'.

It's a shame but I don't see it coming back as long as our leaders and supreme court justices are Liberal and keep changing to accommodate Foreigners.

  • I honestly understand your sentiment, Rosie, I do. And fully.sympathise with it.
I want to propose a different thought to you. If you allow me.
What if the good old times never really existed? What if the good old times were only good for a good old few? And what if the farthest back in time you went, the fewer those few were?
If we were to look back when women were more oppressed and couldn't even vote, for example, were those the good old times?
I propose to you that the principles upon which the Country was founded are still valid. The banners of inclusion and freedom and justice for all do not disappear because special interests and corporate greed run amok.
Those principles have been guiding our National Identity, irrespective of who's behind the wheel, since the times of its foundation.
The fact that those Principles have survived and prevailed for hundreds of years, are a testament to their strength and resilience, regardless of what clowns are running for office.
Just because a dog has fleas, that doesn't make him any less noble. We just have to get rid of the fleas. . . No?
    .
You did answer the question, yes. And by the way, your response is a nice piece of writing all by itself. Thank you.
