They weren't exactly at a high point as a company when this all started, perhaps they put up a big stink thinking it would generate a buzz or even expand the user-base. Who knows, it could have been a marketing ploy or simply a way out in the event that users discovered them?
It's been a provider* for a looong time too, so who knows what the motivations were on either side of the ordeal. Your guess is as good as mine.

Yep. What's even creepier is that such technology is available to anyone. Keyloggers have been around since the heady days of Win 3.1, but that which is now available to the intelligentsia (in and out of government) makes my skin crawl. :-)
...And we haven't even touched on EEG's, CT scans, MRI's, PET scans and the like which can literally read your mind using the right software.

The government is not allowed to read your emails unless they get a warrant. That is what the Constitution says but that doesn't mean much today thanks to the last four globalists who have stolen the presidency over the last 28 years. You are living in a post constitutional tyranny, Barack Hussein Obama is essentially the founding fathers worst nightmare, the framers put checks and balances in the Constitution to avoid any branch of the federal government assuming and taking too much power. Obama's power hungry madness has created the Trump movement. If Trump is for real, he can slow down the destruction of this nation.
