What is the purpose of blowing a whistle that only a dog can hear? What does it do for the dog? How does the blower know it works?

The frequency in a dog whistle is too high for humans to hear, but dogs have better hearing but it must bother the dog somewhat.  A dog whistle is used to modify behavior.  When the dog does something it shouldn't, the whistle is blown and eventually the dog realizes that if he does that, he will hear the sound that others him and stop doing that.

Oh? Oh that makes sense. I had no idea what the purpose was but I never asked. Thank you for informing me of that. Why bother humans with a noise they can hear when there is a special register for dogs. I wonder how that was discovered and by whom? :)

I don't know how it was discovered, but it may have been accidental. :)

Funny how that works. Some say there are no such things as accidents. Whose to say? Thank you for your reply L! :)

I think they say there are no such things as coincidences. :)

I know and you know what? I kinda think I agree. Some "coininkydinks" are unbelievably weird. I'll give you one.

We got a new dentist months ago on recommendation of a neighbor. Close to us in Hemet. Turns out he is ARMENIAN like me but here is where the coinkydinks get way weird.

My first marriage was at St. Gregory's Armenian Apostolic Church in Pasadena, California. He was married there as well!

When my sister and I were young we went to Armenian School there. His children also attended Armenian School!

He is young enough to be my GRANDSON and the similarities of our experiences occurred  in vastly different decades. And we find ourselves now in Hemet, California? What are the odds of that?

I hope you got goosebumps because I still get them. When I emailed my sis about it she could not believe it! There ya go. What else is out there similarly "coincidental"? I can hardly wait to find out! :) This post was edited by RosieG at July 21, 2020 2:38 PM MDT

No kidding! I've experienced other coinkydinks but never quite that weird! All because of a neighbor's reommendation. Without that we would never have met! I wonder how much of life is "planned" coincidence? Thank you for your reply L! :)

Thanks L. California is on track to surpass New York in virus cases. You have over 414,000. We're currently at oer 410,000 and rising. This is not a contest I'd ever relish. You know I dislike competition so I never compete. This way? I can't think of a more horrible. Oh didja hear what der speigleman said when asked about Ghislaine Maxwell? "I wish her the best". I am not joking. What a piece of crappy trash he is. Sheesh. :)

I know this is not a contest any of us wants to win.  I'm just sad that in spite of good intentions initially, CA is going in the wrong direction.

Yes, I did hear what he said about Maxwell.  Did you hear that he said the virus is likely to get worse before it gets better?  A complete 180!  Six months after most everyone said that, and he said we'd be down to one case before long, he's now saying the opposite.  I think he's only admitting it because he's falling behind in the polls when Biden is getting virtually no real press.

Exactly right. He is FORCED to speak truth because what he has been doing is LOSING. He has no core no center no values no honor. Empty hot air. He is the worst piece of trash ever appearing on earth. I expect his children having his genes are similarly trashy. We shall overcome. I hope. Thank you for your reply L! :) This post was edited by RosieG at July 22, 2020 11:50 AM MDT

The only one of his offspring who may have escaped the "Trump" genes is Tiffany.  Marla Maples seems to have limited her exposure.

Methinks der speigleman is not fond of her. A few years back he was quoted as whining about the fact that she was fat, Something like that. Now a dad who would say that about his daughter? Long ago der speigleman was on a show with Ivanka and she was being discussed as if she weren't there. Der speigleman said he'd probably date her if she were not his daughter. Imagine a dad saying that about his daughter? Anyway you slice it der speiglemen is twisted dented demented disgusting. Thank you for your reply L and Happy Thursday. Is your Governor gonna hold off on some openings? I read he fear another spread will occur from "outsiders" bringing it in to your state. Anyway blessings on all of us! :) STAY SAFE.

    He is despicable, that's true.

I don't know if Cuomo will hold off opening up some things, but I do know that he has suspended and/or revoked some liquor licenses of establishments that refused to follow protocols regarding bars and restaurants.  I have to agree with him on that.  Happy Thursday. :)

Good to know he has got your back! Today we go to Winco...then 2 banks...then we are going to be very naughty. A local pie shop POLLY'S has a luscious peach pies seasonally. Our last errand will be to drop by and maybe get one. We'd get one every few weeks or so. Assume they're open to takeout if not dine. We haven't done a single NAUGHTY thin for months. We're due. Of course maybe by the time we get there they will be sold out! Thank you for your reply L and Happy Thursday m'dear! :)

I like the fact that he doesn't make idle threats.  Be careful out there.  I haven't been too bad with sugary stuff lately either.  Trying to be good since I don't get much exercise these days.  We've got a heat wave going and I don't do well outdoors when the weather is this hot and muggy.

Wikipedia is always a good source of insight:

dog whistle (also known as silent whistle or Galton's whistle) is a type of whistle that emits sound in the ultrasonic range, which humans cannot hear but some other animals can, including dogs and domestic cats, and is used in their training. It was invented in 1876 by Francis Galton and is mentioned in his book Inquiries into Human Faculty and its Development, in which he describes experiments to test the range of frequencies that could be heard by various animals, such as a house cat.

The upper limit of the human hearing range is about 20 kilohertz (kHz) for children, declining to 15–17 kHz for middle-age adults. The top end of a dog's hearing range is about 45 kHz, while a cat's is 64 kHz. It is thought that the wild ancestors of cats and dogs evolved this higher hearing range in order to hear high-frequency sounds made by their preferred prey, small rodents.[3] The frequency of most dog whistles is within the range of 23 to 54 kHz,[5] so they are above the range of human hearing, although some are adjustable down into the audible range.

To human ears, a dog whistle makes only a quiet hissing sound.[6] The advantage of the dog whistle is that it doesn't produce a loud irritating noise for humans that a normal whistle would produce, so it can be used to train or command animals without disturbing nearby people. Some dog whistles have adjustable sliders for active control of the frequency produced. Trainers may use the whistle simply to gather a dog's attention, or to inflict pain for the purpose of behaviour modification.

In addition to lung-powered whistles, there are also electronic dog whistle devices that emit ultrasonic sound via piezoelectric emitters.[3] The electronic variety are sometimes coupled with bark-detection circuits in an effort to curb barking behaviour. This kind of whistle can also be used to determine the hearing range for people and for physics demonstrations requiring ultrasonic sounds.
