I have never tasted it, but my stepfather used to eat it and we couldn't go near it. It has a high concentration of butyric acid, which forms naturally in other cheeses, but to a much lesser extent. It is a stench agent which could gag a maggot. It can still be purchased here at a local grocery chain. I wouldn't feed it to terrorist prisoners.
Thank you for your "first-hand" report E. I appreciate it. I do not recall ever seeing it sold anywhere so I just wondered if it were a myth or doth it exist? Did your stepdad have a defective sense of smell? Butyric acid? Oh I love that "could gag a maggot" by the way. Maybe you have to ask for it. Maybe it can't be kept among normal cheeses and so it is kept away in the "back room". But I wonder who was the first to be brave enough to taste it? I sure am not! :)
