The full title is, “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension”.

I’ve seen it many times.  Personally, I thought it was dumb… with a capital D!  I’m not saying it was a bad movie, just a dumb movie.   They tried to make it a cross between a science fiction movie and a screwball comedy.  Unfortunately, they had the main lead play it serious, while everyone else did (bad) comedy.   John Lithgow tried to do a good job, but the material was simply lame!  (“Bring me the over-thruster!”)

I think it was trying to appeal to a juvenile audience (it was a comic book after all).  Some of the names they used sounded like they got them off a bathroom wall at a middle school - John Smallberries, John Bigbooty.  Yet the “heroes” were something out of a 50’s novel.  Something juveniles (at the time) probably couldn’t relate to.  And why did the “good” aliens from planet 10 look and sound like they were from Jamaica (mon)?

The movie has gained cult status, much like “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (which also was bad).

It was about the most UNIQUE MOVIE I've ever seen. I thought it was a total romp making fun of the man who was everything could do everything. He was the TOPS in his field in everything wasn't he and that was a lot of fields! I thought it was a very funny takeoff on overachievers who have to be the best at everything. It's been many decades since I saw it and I do not remember the storyline well. What I remember was how it made me feel. I adored it as I recall. Different strokes. I mean I've seen movies over which people wax poetic that frankly make me barf. "The Bridges of Madison County". GAWD! It glorified a cheap tawdry affair between a passing photographer and a housewife with a wonderful husband/kids who were off a trip and she was home alone. At the end she had to choose between going off with the photographer and staying with her husband. She stayed but we were supposed to be so moved. It was cheap. It was ordinary. It was insulting and I was embarrassed for the actors. Clint Eastwood is a diehard Republican. I expect that kind of crap from him in real life so why not in movies? But MERYL STREEP? The cheating cheap housewife?. Bad choice on her part I think. So you see different strokes m'dear. Thank you for your reply Shuhak! :) I think Buck hit my funnybone! I'm going to ask a question about OVERACHIEVERS! Why not? What could it hurt? This post was edited by RosieG at August 14, 2020 2:17 AM MDT

My favourite scene was the big fight where time kept passing very rapidly.
