This is perplexing. What does weighing yourself before you go into a restaurant have to do with food waste?

A restaurant in China placed two scales at the restaurant and encouraged diners to weigh themselves and then order accordingly.

They said it was to encourage a CLEAN PLATE because there has been an anti-food waste campaign going on in the country upon the orders of the president of China.

Why would how much food I can eat and what I weigh be related?

Isn't it rather important for me to know how much I can reasonably eat and not over order? Whether I weigh 112 or 300 lbs knowing how much I can eat is equally important isn't it and making certain I do not over order? I expect they must frown on taking leftovers home?

Anyway the restaurant is very apologetic and I'm confused. Can anyone make sense of this?

Well, the aim is entirely laudable but I'm as puzzled as you by the method!

I can only think it's a subtle psychological ploy, making people think they need keep trim so won't eat too much!

Well CLEAN YOUR PLATE was or is a goal for China coming from the top. I think food waste happens worldwide. With so many people going hungry every day it doesn't make any sense. I'm glad you're puzzled too Durdle. Very SKINNY people can waste food and those who aren't may never leave a bite on their plates. I guess it sounded good to them to use though it really makes no sense. Thank you for your reply m'dear! :)
