    Earthworm lives matter only insofar as they are of use to us as fertilizer, bait, food, pets, etc. :-)

    That's not to say we should disproportionately abuse them on account of being worms, however.

    Yes. Pets.  Some people actually keep worms as pets...and use their castings as fertilizer. :-)

    Earthworms DO matter, and to a lot more than our wishes as anglers or gardeners.

    Like a vast array of invertebrates living on or in the soil they fulfil roles of their own, and not just as food for birds and other animals. Earthworms help aerate the soil by their burrowing, and help break down fallen leaves by eating them.
