For the most part, politicians have no scruples. I would say it is up to the religious leaders (and the congregants themselves) to keep that from happening.
By 'legal remedy' I meant the one that already exists, and which may be found in the first amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Certainly, the "free exercise" of religion cannot involve government infiltration/fomentation (meddling, IOW).
Great minds cogitate similarly. :-) I was thinking about that as I was typing the response above. It seems as if satellite (read: state and local) governments dare not infringe upon the establishment clause whereas the fed can infringe upon the prohibition clause literally at whim.
