For the longest time I thought Glenn Holland in Mr. Holland's Opus was a real person. I found out the character was fictional and thought he must at least be based off someone that is real. No on both accounts. It's always possible he was inspired by a real teacher but the creators of the movie have never outright confirmed this. I've seen schools that have scholarships and charity foundations named after this fictional character.
