    People like him always turn on each other if/when its advantageous to them.  He's probably trying to look good because trump is looking really, really bad.  trump's acting like a deranged lunatic (more so than usual).  If one wants to save face, they need to distance themselves from such a person.  Simply saying "I never knew the man" (like trump does) doesn't cut it.
