The first southeaster ever recorded? Mountains of snow will be falling. Ice-laded streets and BLACK ICE will form. A change in direction? An omen? A portent? A warning? A Promise?

A large, strong high pressure system over the Atlantic is preventing a deep cold trough from moving off east coast of north america.

As weather systems move across the US from the Pacific, sometimes they dip their" tails" into the Gulf of Mexico.  This enhances the front by pumping moisture and warm air northward along the frontal boundary.  Meanwhile, the troff (on the backside of the front) pulls down cold air from Canada.  The deeper the trough, the further south the cold air is able to flow.  Warm air rises and cold air sinks.  If there's enough mixing (wind), sometimes the warm air aloft can make it to the surface, warming temperatures.  If there's no mixing, the heat is lost into space and it gets cold.

As the Atlantic ridge shifts NE, it will allow the trough to move offshore and the high that was over the West Coast to move over the southern US.  This, coupled with the remnants of a sub-tropical wave (which moved over southern california Thursday) will help moderate temperatures in florida.  The high will also block any pacific fronts from tapping into gulf moisture (at least for a bit), allowing canadian air to settle back into the northeast, cooling them down (snow).

It's a very typical La Nina pattern.

I thought it was due to "the head" having gone there for the holidays and pigged out foodwise and golfed out liewise and hung out to evilize the entire state. So it isn't that then? Thank you for your reply Shuhak. Very scientific. Very informative. Not nearly as dramatic as mine though! :)
