Neither one of these should have happened.  They aren't deployed to some ugly foreign country.  Shame on the Senate.

MRE's are edible and I have eaten my fair share.  They are only terrible if you do not have any Tabasco. Chili Mac is probably the best of the lot

When I was teaching, our building operator was deployed (National Guard) to Afghanistan and brought back some MREs. The one we opened was all but inedible. It did have a tiny bottle of Tabasco. I kept the bottle. Another one is Meals, Rejected by Enemies.

Have heard a lot of names, cruel and unusual punishment for one.  They will keep you feed however.  If you ever have the chance the French Rations are pretty decent.  Now if you get one with the Lamb Stew avoid it, throw it out or give it to someone you do not like
