Since when is FIRING an employee the exact same thing as allowing the employee to RESIGN his position?

    It isn't the same.  However, there have been a number of cases where a person was permitted to resign rather than be fired, presumably to preserve any benefits they might have accrued.

      That’s exactly what happened here, “graciously” allowed to resign, anything to soften the blow.

    It's not the exact same thing, but often an employee is told to resign to avoid being fired which is very close to the same thing. Having an employee resign, instead of being involuntarily terminated can have benefits for both sides.
