Do you think that "period movie" remakes seldom measure up to the standards set by the original version?

Even the actors, I find, often don't look as authentic.

  • Give an example of the type of movie you're talking about.

  • I've just seen the trailer of the recent Ben Hur in one of the AMug groups. It simply doesn't measure up to the 1959/60 version starring Charlton Heston and Stephen Boyd.
Likewise, I've seen several recent films made on various aspects of Christ's life. Here again "King of Kings" starring Jeffery Hunter stands, in my opinion at least,  head and shoulders above the others.
There are others, of more modern setting I can name: Lolita, Far from the Madding Crowd, for starters.
And then of course there are numerous television adaptations.
The remakes may be more accurate, but do not give me anywhere near the pleasure of the original.
But that's just my opinion, Mr Bromide. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at October 20, 2016 8:17 PM MDT

  • I agree with you ... There is a reason Black and white originals are still watched ... In bit to sue of the cause ... It's either the photocopy of the photocopy effect or they feel it can be improved ... In either case leave well enough alone

I think it's sad when nonconformists refuse to conform to the current standard of nonconformity.
