Have we done right by our Republic? Have we kept it safe? Is it in good condition or in desperate need of repair? Is it salvageable?

After the deliberations of the 1787 Constitutional Congress were completed a Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia  engaged in the following conversation with Benjamin Franklin.

"Well Doctor what have we got a republic or a monarchy?" Franklin responded "A republic if you can keep it". How faithfully have we kept it?
