    Our brain wants things to make sense to us...and will fill in details until it makes sense. 
    This is one of the reasons eye witness accounts can be so different between two witnesses.

    There used to be a show that did all types of tests on it.

    Planted memories based on intensive overloading. Repetition repetition repetition. It happened decades ago in Los Angeles at a school. It turned out to be totally false but the stories the children told were wild and disgusting. The "professionals" questioned the children in such a way as to implant memories of things that never happened at all. Scary what planting falsehoods will do.
