    That would be a sales tax.   Game show winnings are income.

      Ok, is the income tax assessed according to the tax laws of the  contestants‘ states of residence, or according to the tax laws of the state in which the game show is located?

    Income tax in the state location of the game show because that is where the income was made.  They will also have to claim it on their Fed 1040.
