The title "The Turn of the Screw" metaphorically states unpleasant turn of the events.This novella drives the event on.The screw turns as the story unfolds and the reader finds herself inside the portrait with the governess looking out. VK
I suspect Sharonna's explanation nails the screw device. ;)
But I really had a difficult time reading that novel. James' extremely lengthy sentences, etc -- I had trouble even following what was going on. And perhaps that may have been James' intent, at least to a small degree - - to make the reader uncomfortable with the whole story by adding a challenging writing style. But I don't think my thoughts hold much water.
I surely love the movie based upon the novel -- "The Innocents," starring Deborah Kerr. Scary, scary movie to me! I saw it when I was young and it terrified me. It still holds up. :)
Some folks love scary everything and thrive on it. Whether it's books or movies or amusement park rides. I am not one of them WQ. I did see The Innocents...well, actually I started to watch it but at some point I turned the channel. I avoid being scared if/when I can. It's just easier on me.
