Just where IS our southern border, anyway?

Hello:

Just so's I can't be accused of stealing, here's a question.  It's a stumper, I know.

According to the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the southern continental border follows the MIDDLE of the Rio Grande River. Therefore, wouldn't immigrants reach the US just a tad north of the middle of the river and well south of the wall?

    I believe that is correct.

Of course, it's odd that they would define a border based on the whims of nature.
They knew at the time that rivers change course.
Maybe both sides were hoping it would wander in their favor?
