When writing “West Side Story”, how did its author come up with Sharks and Jets as the names of the rival gangs?

 

  Do you think he may have researched to ensure he that didn’t use existing gangs’ actual names, or even anything similar to existing gangs’ names?

    It seems animals are a natural for group names.  Look at sports.  Of course now we are going to have guardians and the like.  Now I am offended!
