Is Amazon Channels really an alternative to cable?

I heard an ad for Amazon Channels the other day that said if you use it, you only have to pay for the channels you watch. There doesn't seem to be a page dedicated to the service and I don't understand how it works. Does it work with Fire (the Roku-like device?) I looked at the TV channel apps for Fire and it seems most of them require a cable subscription to work.

  • Meh, yes and no.

Really the only true alternative to cable with a Fire box or stick is to side load Kodi and install the TvAdd-ons repositories to it.   Then you can stream on demand anything available on cable and any movie.  You can even watch Netflix and Amazon Prime shows through the host sites. It's a grey area, but screw 'em.

Sling is  great alternative to cable.  I use it for sports; I don't watch any other TV.  I disconnect it after football season.  I'll get it back next September.

  • Yeah that's a good one too if you don't mind paying.  I pay for Prime and Netflix and go free with Kodi for everything else.  I don't see any reason to have cable anymore.
