Wasn't it introduced, as someone told me, simply to make TV news-room maps of election results by States, clearer to follow?

I don't know how comparable they really are but I gather the British approximate equivalents of the Republicans and Democrats are the Conservative and Labour parties, respectively.

Their colours are the other way round - blue for "Tory", red for Labour - and have been since well before televisions, let alone colour televisions! Labour is mildly socialist and that leaning has used red since its 19C origins. I don't know why blue for the other party.

We've also a party that campaigns under the colour orange. Called the Liberal Democrats, and a bit Left-of-Centre, it was formed way back in the 1970s I think, from the old Liberal Party and a number of disaffected Labour Party politicians.

What fascinates is the meaning behind the color. I guess some psychologist somewhere decided it. My favorite color is blue but so is that the favorite color of many people.  It is a quiet calming soothing color. I like the meaning attendant thereto more than that of "REDS". The red I like is a blue red not orange red. What orange signifies I don't know but I'll GOOGLE it. When my sister was a youngster that was her favorite color! I like orange only if I can eat it...yams oranges carrots. I don't wear it and I don't decorate our home with it. It's just too jarring. Different strokes. Thank you for your reply. I shall GOOGLE orange. It probably signifies genius or something! Just my luck! :)
