Is it acceptable for the IRS and other agencies to require a facial scan to verify your identity?

Not if we're talking western programs.
There is a reason that facial scans are not used to apprehend criminals in the US.
The technology is not reliable, especially when used on black people.

Now, why did I mention "western programs"?
Because the Chinese have been using facial recognition software for a number of years, but I don't know how accurate it is for other races.
IE: It may be 99% accurate on Chinese, but less on blacks.  (similar to the problem western programs have)

The Chinese have been planning ahead.

IRS.gov is requiring a selfie video to make an online account. This post was edited by my2cents at February 18, 2022 10:28 AM MST

    That's funny.
How do they prove that it's a "selfie", if they don't already have your photo?
Even if it somehow detects that the video is a "live feed", there are plenty of apps to edit video "live".

You also have to upload your photo ID.

    HA!
I just did a web search, and there are a bunch of places what will generate an AI photo based on your choices.

Nope.  Too many ways to create an artificial ID, without you having to go in and have your picture taken - like a driver's license.

And it still doesn't address the issue of identity theft.
Thief: "Hey, the IRS has my photo and video on file, proving I'm who I say I am."

I guess I can't get one, then. No smart phone. Another example of discrimination. Don't get me started.

They tell you to borrow someone else's phone. I tried helping my MIL and that was the direction it gave her.

It's not acceptable to me. I am more interested in whether or not it is legal. Also, I have met my twin. I was shocked when we met. So was he. That could be a problem when trying to identify either of us. This post was edited by Element 99 at February 18, 2022 7:28 AM MST

No. I am not happy about their new online Idme system.  It is also taking a voice analysis. (Requiring a video selfie to create your account)
I will have to use snail mail for IRS payments now. This post was edited by my2cents at February 18, 2022 10:30 AM MST

Postal maybe.  But UPS and FedEx etc will still deliver.

There was some 60 Minutes or 20/20 show recently on how the Post Office is in danger of closing.
    I call bunk.
The Postal Service delivers a bunch of packages for UPS and Amazon, since those apparently can't keep up with deliveries.
