Iceberg is the world's most popular lettuce. However, is there a good reason why not to substitute a different lettuce rather than CABBAGE

if iceberg lettuce is unavailable? There's cos, coral, oakleaf etc.

Cabbage is gross, but I'm using oakleaf lettuce in the salad tonight due to the local shortage of iceberg.

I have never heard of those. Cabbage would be horrible on a burger. I use Romain once in a while when it is on sale. Local stuff should be available soon.

Slawburgers aren't too revolting. Doesn't work with fried chicken though.

Furious over lettuce, seriously? These people need to get lives and possibly cut back on the greasy, fried fast food.

Stu, rather than criticizing the nature of the questions asked, if you don't like some topic, move on to something else.  Your constant harping on the nature of questions asked and the answers to them is becoming irritating.

You misread my answer. I was criticizing KFC customers for getting worked up over lettuce. How is that about the nature of the question?

My mistake - I didn't open the link, but there have been so many times you've criticized questions and responses that it wasn't a big leap here.

But it's not fair to bite my head off here because of another post you didn't like, so I accept your apology in advance. It's also important to point out that we are all free to post as we see fit. Lots of folks post controversial things that might rub others the wrong way.

My apologies.  Yes, we are all free to post as we see fit, but just because you CAN complain, doesn't mean you HAVE to complain.

By the same token, just because one CAN post nonsense doesn't mean one SHOULD post nonsense.

I like a salad that has a mixture of lettuces - romaine, iceberg, cabbage, radicchio.  Walmart has this really good romaine mixture that also has shredded carrots.  I add in diced chicken, cherry tomatoes, pecans of walnuts and dried cranberries.  The small bag is just perfect for two lunches for one person and I don't wind up throwing out a lot of food that I haven't used up.

Just as an aside, Iceberg lettuce contains folate and vitamin A, but is otherwise known for being the least nutrient-dense salad green so the fact that you can't get it might be a blessing in disguise.
