  • The personal crisis of an artist often forces invention.
This can lead to originality. By this I mean a major change, not just slight variations on a style or theme.
But success is never guaranteed by innovation or quality alone.
The originality can then trigger a public "crisis" in art: debate about what is acceptable and why.
This is part of the politics and social dynamics which influence how works of art are received over time.
Originality is one of the factors that creates shifts in the dominant paradigm of aesthetics and expression in culture.
It is part of how culture evolves.
The works of the earliest artists in each movement are good examples. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at November 9, 2016 6:26 PM MST

  • I would suggest the role is not similiar to crisis per se.

Instability moulds malliable minds, idealistic beauty distracts. Ground zero.

Destroy and rebuild in a gilded image,

It just depends who's wielding the brushes.

Addendum. Art is a con. It elevates us to where we don't belong. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at November 9, 2016 6:26 PM MST

The crisis in art is when someone colors outside the lines.
