How do you feel about news organizations who had reporters embedded with Hamas ON Oct 7th?

CNN, Reuters,  AP had reporters with Hamas during Oct 7th attack.  Should they have warned Israel?

    Why?

Because it happened and they can’t go back and retroactively give warnings.

Are they still embedded? Should they help the hostages?
I think if they knew it was coming and ignored the brutality in search of a story is very unethical and they should recieve some sort of penalty.  Just as someone who did not rob the bank just drove the getaway car would be considered a bank robber, it not the photographer who helped a terrorist attack also a terrorist.

How would you prove such a thing?

It’s like trying to prove that there was a conspiracy to assassinate JFK. It’s in the past and you can’t.

They were there taking pictures during the attack.  They took pictures BEFORE the Israel border was breached....their pictures prove it. This post was edited by my2cents at November 10, 2023 4:56 PM MST

    Hello My:

A reporter is there to report, not to spy..  Plus, getting caught spying is probably deadly..

You do not find it unethical to have been there during the attack?

Unless that can be proven, it’s a moot point.

Then what do you think they should have done?

Warned people. Not take pictures of people being murdered, raped, burnt, kidnapped, etc.  Refused to help the terrorists.
Israel says they consider them terrorists....I agree.

Would it have been ethical for a photographer to take pictures of the 9/11 terrorists before the boarded the planes and then pictures of the towers and people before during and after the attack?

    Hello my:

If they KNEW they were photographing a terrorist event in the making, they're no longer journalists - they're conspirators and terrorists.. They may CALL themselves journalist, but don't be fooled.

Pursuant to the 1st Amendment of the Constitution, in this great nation of ours, journalists are FREE to cover ANY story they have a mind to.   That's the American way

Just because some reporters were present, doesn't mean they could have known - sadly. Hamas held their cards extremely tight; they wouldn't just have let some reporter find out, if even Israeli-US intelligence (working so closely together) were completely in the dark.

They were there DURING the attack....not after. DURING.

These were freelance photojournalists who sold their photos to major news outlets. We might ask if it is ethical for the media to buy those photos but they publish them because consumers want to see them. So, it can be hard to tell where the fault, if any, lies.

It reminds me of our local news station during a tornado. They tell everyone to take shelter and don't take any risks including trying to video the storm. Then, they add: but if you do have any footage be sure and send it to us.

Freelance photographers who regularly work with those news organizations.  On of the organizations has cut all ties with one they use. I don't remember which one.

During the attack is what bothers me,  How would we have treated a photographer who took picts of the 9/11 terrorists just before boarding the planes?
