Compared to what you know about this hideous mess, I confess I should not even weigh in.  I can give you the layman's take.   Humbly.  I am very humble right now, as I feel as though I have been kicked in the gut very very hard.

    Digression over.

I think that because what happened, did happen, that no one would have won.  Not Bernie, certainly.  The strategy was much like 911.   We may have been divided pro/anti Bush in this great country of ours, but when a national catastrophe that could threaten our way of life entered, we at least tried to bond together.  The best we knew how.

I am leaning toward what you have been saying that I have caught.  I think you mentioned that there were several factors regarding how the polls got it so wrong.  Well, this may be part of the root.  I think Americans would unite against TRUMP if:

They could see the bomb hitting the tower.  Meaning they cannot think beyond the physical.  They need a picture.  If they are TOLD that Trump is bad, they don't see it.  They see the tinsel and trash.  They see the promises and hang onto that.

So, Amerika needs a bomb to wake them up.  That is exactly what they voted for.  This is exactly what they are going to get.

  • That article pretty much nails it on what happened Tuesday.  The DNC ignored the anti-establishment sentiment in this country and did everything in it's power to kill their highly favorable anti-establishment candidate and promoted a warhawk insider. They through their own doing made a  corporate businessman and nutjob become the anti-establishment candidate. One who picked the entrenched VP choice he could have no less.  I don't think the people owe an apology.  They people deserve an apology from the DNC and the rabid Hillary pushers who rigged their own party's system to give Hillary the nom.  The DNC made every possible mistake they could have in this election.  They ignored way too many of her flaws whether real or perceived ( both) and they allowed themselves to become blindsided in their quest to elect her that  they ignored the sentiment of much of theirs and the independent voter base.  They assumed the average voter and person cares more about off color remarks and  vile hyperbole than scandals and connections to bankers, military contractors, past support for war, trade deals, etc.  What they severely miscalculated is how sick and tired people on the left, right, and center are of over zealous PC wars.  That's what pushed a lot of nonsexist and nonracist people away and towards a candidate that has support from misogynist and racist groups as well.  The backlash from people tired of identity politics.   They lost touch big time.  They ignored too many of their supporters, ignored the a deep underlying sentiment that exists across the board, focused too heavily on identity issues, and took way too much for granted. @Gils -- I'm with you right up until the "identity politics" part.

You get  "Mexican Rapist"/"Kill the Muslim's families"/"Nasty Woman" Trump to drop his "identity politics" and get his racist/xenophobic/sexist supporters to drop their "identity politics" and I'll CONSIDER dropping my "Gee, cops should quit shooting unarmed N*gg*rs with impunity" identity politics.

It's not my job to be sensitive to the prejudices of biogoted f***tards. It's THEIR job to develop a more enlightened view of the world, or suffer social sanction for failing to do so.

  • I agree. I'm not suggesting you do.  It's not what I'm suggesting.  It was a factor, is all I'm saying and it wasn't because the swing voters were racist themselves.`Nor am I saying this is all why "I' disapproved of Clinton.  What I am saying is they relied on it too much to carry a candidate that too many saw way too flawed in other areas.  I think you're assuming I support Trump or actually agree with him. That's a false assumption if so.

I would like to add the DNC made horrible mistakes in who they thought would and wouldn't vote.  A misjudgement of passions against the candidates.

Here is what I see and that is hillary cheated bernie on this and perhaps she could have won without cheating but she did cheat and she gave the person who helped her cheat an honorary position on her campaign. How could that not turn a certain amount of voters from her? Maybe she lost just 2 percent of democrat support but that was enough to lose the election. If she had not cheated she may still have won the nomination and kept that 2 percent of support intact or she may have lost the nomination and bernie who was beating trump in those matchup polls at the time could have won the election.

I do not understand the anger at trump for winning. The whole point is to win. The anger should be directed at hillary who created this loss.
