What's to stop Trump from arresting citizens who support any cause his regime doesn't like?

Mahmoud Khalil, in the country legally, married to a US citizen who is eight months pregnant, expressed his political point of view peacefully, a right protected by the First Amendment.

That's supposed to be permitted in a democracy.

If this egregious assault on civil liberties stands, what's to stop His Royal Orangeness from arresting American citizens who support any cause his regime doesn't like? That's what Putin does.

    Not a citizen.

And in the country leading a group that protests and supports terrorists.    We do not need people like that in the USA.  Supporting terrorism both in Israel and USA, he should be not only deported but arrested and charged with terrorism etc.

No, he was protesting peacefully. Some of the others in the group he was with (right of free association) may have had tenuous links to terrorist organisations by proxy. Khalil has none. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at March 14, 2025 12:54 PM MDT

Khalil is a green card holder (permnent resident).  As such, he is protected by all laws of the United States, your state of residence and local jurisdictions and entitled to due process under our laws.  He has not been charged with a crime.  Therefore, his detainment is illegal as no process has been followed by the government.
