Will you please stop comparing apples with oranges? GST (we DON'T HAVE VAT, THAT'S BRITISH) applies to all goods and services, not just American ones or foreign ones generally. Local goods and services are subject to it as well (unprocessed food and some staples are exempt, including some from America if they pass quarantine).

It would be cute if it wasn't so infuriating. The consumption tax was introduced by the Howard government which was almost conservative by American standards - certainly Reaganomic at the very least.
