They need to learn how to eat first.  No one cares about food over there.

Lucia, YES.  You have that stigma for some reason.  I have friends who moved there and lamented normal grocery store fare from the States.  But that was a long time ago.   I love Jamie Oliver and those 2 Fat ladies and Nigella.  If you guys eat like that, you are awesome, indeed.

  • Thank you, S. The perception is outdated and erroneous. And I love the fact that two huge guys from Newcastle has made an impression over there!

The British  are so enamored of all things culture, I would think they would be totally enmeshed in the cooking aspect.   So, I know they can do a bang-up job if they put their minds to it.

  • To answer the question, I don't think we hanker after an equivalent. After all, it would be difficult to isolate one single event in British history that would be a corollary.
And the start of the holiday season is Christmas, except if you're a Member of Parliament in which case you bunk off in November and aren't seen again until January. Democracy - don't yer just love it. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at November 14, 2016 9:15 AM MST

Why not make Guy Fawkes Day the beginning of the Christmas season?

  • It doesn't, Flipper. Guy Fawkes day is just a one off thing, like Halloween. Festivities don't start until Christmas and last 2 weeks maximum. Hope that helps.

  • Most Americans think the 12 days of Christmas ends on Christmas instead of starting on Christmas.

  • You only get so much statutory holiday in this country, and you're back at work on January 2nd.

  • Didn't you know? the evocation of constitutional law and in defence of that famed Parliamentary soveriegnty is seditious mob speak. It said so in the Daily Mail  :) This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at November 14, 2016 9:23 AM MST

  • Ah yes, British democracy as determined by the Nazi-sympathising Daily Hate Mail.
But! there must be a picture of a baby royal in there somewhere to remind us how insidious scrounging benefits recipients are - well that would be the baby then.

You guys should celebrate allowing India it's freedom day.    And you should remember not to enslave a nation again.   Just like we should celebrate freeing the slaves day instead of Thanking God for giving.

  • You're right, S. We as an ex-imperial power have a lot to feel humble about.
But thinking about it, if Farage ever achieves his autocratic ambition I reckon 'Indepence From Europe' day might be something he would want us to give thanks for.
