The sites belong to whomever truly owns it. Here it is JA, Facebook Zuckerburg, ..... someone owns a site that person pays the bills. Users are not the owners. Sometimes the owner is a user.

Not sure what you mean then. Owns and belong to sound legal and financial to me.
But if you mean something else, please, feel free to clarify.

  • A site belongs to whomever pays to keep it running. All members count as equals though.

  • Sorry,  guess I misunderstood the question. Every member does have an equal part though. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at November 14, 2016 5:38 AM MST

They are private companies. They might be "free" to use, but corporations own them. They can kick anyone off at any time and regulate the site however they want. I'm sure some laws apply to them, but they have enough lawyers to get around them.

Unfortunately many people have given them A LOT of power by viewing them as if they were some benign magical entity that they have the right to use.

You know that TOS box you just click? That's where their power lies.

Social Sites are kind of like malls of Ye Olden Days. They appear to be public spaces, but the minute you start doing something they don't like, security comes and kicks you out.

  • Exactly.  People confuse private public open to the public with public property these days.  What's even sillier is how many people believe private property open to the public should be mandated to be treated as public property.

  • The site doesn't belong to anyone but the site owner in any way, shape, or form.
